Relocating to the US as a Civil Engineer — What You Need to Know
The United States is one of the most exciting markets in the world for civil and structural engineers right now. Infrastructure investment is at record levels, salaries are strong and the project portfolio available — from flood defence in Houston to subway modernisation in New York — is genuinely world class. If you are a civil engineer in the UK or Europe considering a move to the US, here is what you need to know.
The PE Licence — Professional Engineer The most important credential you will need for civil engineering in the US is the Professional Engineer licence, known as the PE. This is a state-by-state licence that allows you to legally stamp and approve engineering drawings. Without it, you can still work as an engineer in most states but you cannot take legal responsibility for designs.
To obtain a PE licence you typically need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, work for four years under a licensed PE, and then pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. If you have a UK CEng qualification from the ICE, this can sometimes support your application under mutual recognition agreements — worth investigating for your target state.
Visa options The most common visa pathway for skilled engineers is the H-1B visa, which requires employer sponsorship. Many large US contractors and engineering firms are experienced at sponsoring engineers from the UK and Europe. There is also the O-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary ability and the EB-2 green card route for professionals with advanced degrees.
Salary expectations UK civil engineers relocating to the US are often pleasantly surprised by salary levels. Senior civil engineers in major US cities typically earn between $90,000 and $140,000 — and in cities like San Francisco and New York, total compensation can be significantly higher. Cost of living varies enormously by city, with Houston and Atlanta offering an excellent balance of high salary and affordable living.
